By age 50, about 50% of all women and many men will get some form of visible leg veins. Some will only have small spider veins and some will have larger varicose veins. Whichever category they fall into, most individuals would like these veins gone.
Fortunately, there are several options available to them, none of which involve significant pain, swelling or downtime.
Our clinic uses two main treatment strategies to sclerose or close down the veins. For the smaller vessels, we use the Intense Pulsed Light device. The IPL is a safe and effective way to selectively destroy the vessel without harming the surrounding tissues. It emits a light with a wavelength that is preferentially absorbed by the red color of the vessel, heating the vessel and destroying it. This method is less painful and destructive than laser destruction and the patient can go back to work immediately.
For larger vessels, we inject with a solution that causes them to scar down and close. This method is also very effective, safe and relatively pain free. Usually the patient can go back to work either the same day or on the next day after injection, we encourage our patients to wear a compressive wrap for a few days.
Spider vein treatment is easy and almost painless, but it often will involve more than one treatment, depending on the vessels and areas invloved. We tell our patients that 2 to 3 treatment sessions is the average that they will be needing, spaced about 1 month apart.
Modern spider and varicose vein treatment is effective and safe. If performed properly, the patient should expect 100% resolution of his or her spider veins or varicose varicose veins without recurrence.
We are happy to discuss your specific concerns at any time. Just give us a call or set up a complementary consultion with Dr. Rivkin or one of our laser nurse specialists. |
