Our Palomar Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Laser Hair Removal system treats most skin and hair types quickly and without pain. Why go through the pain and bother of shaving, plucking, tweezing, waxing, stringing or electrolysis only to have the hair come back, sometimes thicker than before?
Laser hair removal is the only known method of eliminating hair once and for all. Long term studies in the US and Europe have shown the technology to be effective and safe when used by experienced professionals (i.e. laser trained nurse or MD).
Within 3 to 5 brief, painless treatments, most of the hair in the treated area disappears. Occasionally clients need a touch up session about 6 months after the end of their series to get rid of a few stray hairs.
Good laser hair removal centers are clean and pleasant, their staff is accessible, knowledgeable and well trained, there is a physician with cosmetic training available on site for consultation and their equipment is up to date.
All laser hair removal systems function on the same principle. Intense light of a specific wavelength or set of wavelengths is sent through the top layers of the skin. This light is designed to selectively concentrate and heat dark tissue without damaging the lighter surrounding tissue. The energy destroys dark hair follicles without damaging the relatively lighter skin cells. This is why laser hair removal is most effective for people with light skin and dark hair.
Darker skin types or tanned skin take longer to treat because the contrast between skin and hair is less. As the light passes through the darker skin, relatively more of the energy gets absorbed by the tissue around the hair shaft. High energy settings would, therefore, cause damage to skin. We use less energy during each session to avoid burning the patient's skin. This is why darker skin takes a few more sessions to treat than lighter skin. This is also why we encourage our clients to stay away from the sun a few weeks before as well as during the course of their laser hair removal series.
Light hair is more problematic. Many centers will claim that they can treat light hair. Results are difficult to predict. There is no technology available that will effectively treat blonde hair, but reddish or light brown hair can be treated (more sessions are necessary). IPL tends to work better than diode or other lasers on lighter hair because it emits a broader variety of wavelegths of light.
So why did we choose the Palomar Intense Pulsed Light system over Photolysis HR, LightSheer, GentleLase, CoolGlide, Galaxy, Aurora and others? First, Dr. Rivkin identified the most effective systems and then tried these systems on himself and his friends. The Palomar was fast, hurt less and was the least prone to burning people. We have not been disappointed. Our results have been outstanding, even for patients with dark skin or light hair. |
