Often dark circles under the eyes are caused by a protrusion of the lower eyelid tissue, otherwise known as "bags under the eyes." These "bags" or dark circles give the person a tired appearance and make the face look older than it would otherwise. There is a large variety of topical creams and products on the market that claim to improve or even eliminate the appearance of dark circles. These products sometimes have some benefits, but often do not. Even when they do work, their effect is often short lived.
Until now, the only other option available was a surgical procedure called Blepharoplasty - where the protruding tissue was removed via an incision either inside or outside of the eyelid. Aside from the standard surgical risks such as scarring, bruising, eye damage and poor cosmetic results, patients who get blepharoplasty also run the risk of a hollow or sunken eye appearance as they age and their face naturally thins out.
Dr. Rivkin has recently developed a non invasive alternative to blepharoplasty that effectively eliminates dark circles under the eyes without the risks of surgery. He uses injectable fillers to even the contour between the lower eyelid and the cheek. Since a big component of the dark circles is the shadow that falls into an irregular contour, the dark circles disappear as the contour normalizes.
Dr. Rivkin uses Radiance or Restylane, depending on your preference. Restylane lasts for 6 months and Radiance lasts for 2 years. The advantage to using a temporary filler rather than getting permanent surgery is that the procedure can be adjusted as you age so that you always look natural. Another advantage is price. Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty costs a fraction of what the surgical alternative costs. Some mild bruising occurs after the procedure, but this resolves within a few days.
